To DL a movie, it's less than 4.5gb, and the movie's still less than 4.5gb when extracted.
Really, to comfortably DL/burn movies, 40gb is plenty. It's when you start storing them that you run into space issues.

don't people download divx'd movies? who actually download's full dvd vob's which come out to be 4.5gb's?

i download LOTS of divx'd car vids (which come out to be roughly 700mb's per vid), and i'm still under the 60gb bandwith limit

Canada is changing copyright laws and signing international agreements. Soon, ISPs will log users who have high bandwith report the activity to music/movie companies.

There will be lawsuits by recording company's against individuals, just like in the states.


Maybe rogers picked 60 gb as the threshold limit for reporting?

How does this work..if I'm playing ps2 online..is that using up part of my 60gig bandwidth allowance? Because really..surfing..downloading the odd porn(odd as in ever so often not midgets with screwdrivers and bottled water), ps2 online and msn is all I use internet for.

I have to admit, when i first signed on with Rogers it was because of the Sympatico limit fiasco. I was pissed about it. Now that Rogers is following suit, I was mixed in reactions. At first i was pissed, but I stopped and thought about how much I really download. Most of my movies are ripped using dvd shrink, done in about 3 hours. Works for me. So i guess it is ok, for now. So long as my sister in law doesn't visit too often and get freaky on limewire... (biatch!)

If I can find a movie that has the full DVD vob's I will download that instead of the DivX versions for one reason: Dolby Digital 5.1....

It's the sound that makes the movies.. and if you have a system that is 5.1 it makes the movie just that much more enjoyable.

i suppose, but i wouldn't have the patience to wait for a 4.5 gb movie to download, even if i'm getting great download speeds of 500-600 kb/s which is rare for sources like bitorrent or even private ftp's

TORONTO — Those who enjoy swapping music, books and movies online may want to reconsider.

The federal government inched closer Thursday to cracking down on file sharing by announcing several proposed amendments to the Copyright Act.

The changes would include the signing of two World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaties and forcing Internet service providers to keep records of those who share high volumes of copyright-protected material such as songs, Hollywood movies and TV shows.

The amendments would "clarify that the unauthorized posting or the peer-to-peer file-sharing of material on the Internet will constitute an infringement of copyright,'' say documents released jointly Thursday by Canadian Heritage and Industry Canada.

"It will also be made clear that private copies of sound recordings cannot be uploaded or further distributed.''

The reforms, which will be introduced in the House of Commons later this spring, would give the music industry greater power to stop such behaviour through the courts via lawsuits. Currently, it is not illegal in Canada to upload material to programs like Kazaa and BearShare.

"Clearly, once we get implementation there'll be no doubt . . . it'll be illegal to engage in unauthorized file-sharing,'' said Graham Henderson, who heads the Canadian Recording Industry Association, which represents the country's record labels.

Adding Canada's name to the list of 50 countries already using the WIPO treaties would make it illegal to distribute and trade music online.

It would also become a crime to remove or circumvent copyright protections on CDs.

The amendments also ask that ISPs such as Rogers, Shaw and Bell "play a role in curbing the misuse of their facilities for copyright infringement.''

ISPs would have to notify subscribers when illegal activity is detected via their Internet connection. They would also be required, as is the case in the United States and parts of Europe, to keep a log of such warnings in case of a lawsuit _ although a court order would be needed to make the names and addresses known to prosecutors.

In pre-committee meetings the copyright amendments were approved by all political parties.

The Hidden Bandwidth Cap
 

Here is the Sneaky part that Rogers and Bell don't tell you.

ISP's cap Bandwidth per Port aswell. Certain Download Heavy progrmas, such as limewire, bearshare, and Torrents use certain ports exclusively.

I beleive some of the more common ports are 60, 88, 90. etc (i can't remember right now what they all are)

So what the ISP's do is limit how much BW goes through those ports to each user, effectively limiting your download and upload speeds through these port. College and University Campuses are notorious for limiting these ports in a very Nazi style way.

dvd movies are about 4gb. Plus the sites i get them from release them like a week or two before they are released in stores. So the site requires your to upload at least as much as your download. And i have 2x200gb HD. And i dont site infront of my computer all day. I jus click and let it download. :D
