Following her 2006 tour of duty in Iraq, Rivera refused to return. Instead, she and her husband packed their two kids in the car and made the long journey from Mesquite, Texas to Canada. When they crossed the Rainbow Bridge on February 18, 2007, she became the first female Iraq War resister to come to the country.
