1 hp = 33,000 ft·pound-force·min−1 = exactly 745.69987158227022 W
The easiest way I can think to put it is 33,000 foot-pounds per minute
It's a measure of force over time basicly.
It term and rating for HP was invented by James Watt.

We did stuff about this in my high school physics class. But that was 7 years ago and all I can remember is I have 2 horsepower, we calculated it by timing a run up some stairs and plugging in how much we weighed into some equation.
