Windows 7

I have being hearing quite a bit of talk about Windows' new OS and I 'm wondering if I should take the plunge. I am still using XP - am I missing anything all that?

You should be fine with XP, as Microsoft are supporting it until 2014. Many people I have spoken to say that the betas and the release candidate was very stable, it is what Vista should have been.

However if you have any apps that will only run on XP, then you would have to purchase the professional edition that has XP mode built in, so you can run those apps on Windows 7, however Microsoft do recommend an extra 1 gig of memory to run XP mode, so that would make the minimum recommendation 2 gig.

That shouldn't however affect home users, so the home edition should be fine for your needs.

Well 2GB machines are a dime a dozen these days. RAM prices are the least to worry about but I was concerned that I'd be left sitting dry with XP.

XP is the low end right now. The people left in the dark are the ones still using Win98 and older. 7 will hopefully be better than the joke that Vista was. By the time I upgrade, though, the bugs will hopefully be worked out. I never like to be first on the operating system bandwagon.

I had a friend today install 7 on his work machine and so far he likes it, then again this is coming from someone who is a hardcore geek that rarely likes anything that M$ does.

Actually, it looks like I might be getting a new computer before the year is up, which is totally unexpected. Is Windows 7 out already? I didn't think it was, so I'm anxious to hear any thoughts of it. I'm actually still using Win98 so I imagine this would be a huge jump.

If you are an IT specialist and subscribe to TechNet or MSDN, then you get advance copies of the operating system.

The rest can pre-order before the October release.

I've heard great reviews about Windows 7, but still I would wait before buying it. I'm a believer in not getting the very first of any software or hardware.

Personally I'm waiting until at least the first service pack comes out for Windows 7.

I think you should wait a year or so and then decide if it is a good idea. I use Windows 7 at work and I prefer windows xp still.
