yep, you can drop the japanese BP motor in it, they came in the escort gt's, mazda proteges, mx-3's..turboing it would make a quick little car as these cars are already fairly lightweight. etdracing also makes a nice log style manifold for it too..

Firstly. Hi. I have a 95 GT.
1) No, a manifold off a GT (1.8l Mazda BP engine) will NOT fit onto a 1.9.
2) You CAN swap a BP into the 1.9. But, if you're gonna go that route, you might as well buy the Mazda BP-T (Turbo 1.8 makes about 180 hp) and swap that in instead, since it will have more power and uses the same parts are the regular BP. You pretty much need a full parts car though for misc. odds and ends. ( The BPT will prtobably coust around 1200-1400 for the engine, and a regular BP can be had for a few hundred bucks. I have one in my garage I don't want anymore)
3) For a direct swap, buy an SPI engine from a 97 (I beleive) escort. It's a 2.0 with (I think) 110 hp. More power and a fairly straightforward swap. These engines can be found for very cheap.
go over and sign up on www.feoa.net. it's a escort board, and they can help you way more then asking on a general car board.

You're not looking for any Mazda that came to North America to find the BP-T. You've gotta get it from an engine importer, or find someone who is selling one.
If you go with a BP-T, you need the Escort GT drivetrain and tranny and all taht too. If you only want a bit more power, or a better base to start from, try the SPI. They can be had for very cheap.
