D16 into 93 civic VX...

Hey my brother is getting a 1998 1.6el SOHC VTEC motor for $500 and we just want to know a couple things...

First off what are all the parts needed to make it work?

Can we use the 1.6el drive shafts? or can we use stock ones from the vx?

Which ECU do we need? the 1.6el or the stocker?

I just want to make sure we get all the parts and don't have to spend to much. I've been told you can use STOCK mounts so is there anything else we'll need from the 1.6el?

thanks in advance!

if the vx you got is already manual, just swap in the engine and be done with it, everything will bolt up like stock, D series engine came stock in those things from the factory and your swapping in another D series engines, so it's pretty straight forward, as far as the ecu goes, your in trouble with this one, p28's do not run y8's very well AT ALL, so your best method is to pick up a conversion harness to run the ecu intended for the 1.6 EL (D16Y8) engine. Make sure you pay attention to the year when ordering the harness, 96-98 is OBD2A, 99+ is OBD2B.

so it would be best to get a conversion harness for the 98 motor correct?

Would it still run at its full potential just with the p28 ecu?

What other ecus can I use that would work better without the conversion harness?

The p28 will run it okay, just not amazingly. best bet is to get a p28 and chip it. wouldnt suggest converting to obd2 at all, too much emmisions B.S. you will have to add a second O2 sensor and a knock sensor too.

like mark said it's more expensive to run the obd2 conversion, but the harnesses are less than 150, it's plug and play with the p2p ecu, if you have the complete engine, and that includes harness and associated accesories, including all sensors, it's easy, nothing runs like a stock ecu, the p28 will require some major timing changes to extract the most out of the y8, as the obd2 d16's run 12.50 degree base timing due to the knock sensor as the obd1 d16's run 16.50 degree base timing.

sorry didn't finish last post, as far as the second o2 is concerned, without the secondary o2, you'll throw a cel, but you can always plug in another o2 sensor, that will eliminate the solid cel, but it will throw the secondary o2 code after an extended period of time (i.e weeks)

so what your saying its better to get the conversion harness?

Do you know where I can locally find a CONVERSION harness for this swap?

I'm trying to keep this so that we dont spend to much $$.

But at the same time I want the engine to run perfect.

what might be easier to do is get a P28 and chip it as the Y8's P2P ecu

There is no vtec wiring issues with putting a Z6 into a VX, the VX is already wired for vtec. plug n' play!

thats wat i thot but wasn't 100%, don't want to say something not knowing.

as far as i know the motor only needs a car and rotor to run but since i pulled the motor already i can't be certain. the motor turned over no problem, and had fuel...hence no spark, when i pulled off the distributer cap i looked pretty worn im about 80% sure thats all it needs

imo you're asking too much. i got my replacement z6 for 250$ and it has only 160km on it.
