I heard that on a new car you had to "develop" the engine, what does that mean?

Did you hear this from someone a little older? Used to be a new engine had to be kept under 2000 rpms for the first 500 miles and a "break in" oil used. Machining tollerances are much tighter now so this is not longer an issue. You should be able to drive it however you want. Read the owners manual to see if they require any break in period but they shouldn't

Basicly what they are saying is that you need to "break it in". Put some miles on it, in the beginning you are driving it to settle the parts into place. After 500 miles it is ready to be abused, drifting, peeling out, speeding.. anything you want but after the 500 mark. I'm no mechanic so I could just be blowing smoke up your bum, but this is what i've heard. I hope I'm right =D

The parts have to wear in gradually so don't stress the engine too much for at least 500 miles. It's like a new pair of shoes..you have to wear them around and break them in gradually before walking all day in them to avoid blisters.

When you buy a new car from the dealership, the engine is already broken in halfway, thus never getting a new car that ACTUALLY says zero miles. Now, if for some reason the vehicle legitimately has zero miles on it, the proper way to break in an engine is to start it up and FULLY let it warm up, and drive it around, constantly varying the rpm's between 2,000 and 4,000, Much easier to do on a manual vehicle. Dont be afraid to be a little heavy on it. keep in mind highway driving is NOT a good thing for a new engine. Babying a fresh engine will cause the piston rings to not properly seat themselves, resulting in a slight loss of power, MPG, etc...
After about 200 miles of this i STRONGLY suggest changing the engine oil and tranny oil. You do this because you do not what the metal fragments and shavings that loosen themselves to be recirculated through the oil, this will scratch your cylinder bores and possibly your bearings.
