question about honda civic ex 1996, can you help?

My honda civic died on me; but it was weird. When I turned the key, the radio would turn on and everything would go good. But when I tried to turn on the car completely, it wouldnt start. Now we would get jumps, and my car would take the jumps for a couple of seconds. Do you think its the altornator?? i charged my battery last time, and i drove it or watever but it died on me again down the street luckily. when i was driving it it was using a lot of power and it was pulling back;; not only that but i heard a weird sound. I havent gave my car a tune up for a couple of months; do u think if i give it a tune up and buy a new altornator my baby would ride smooth again?

all you have to do to test your alternator is pull your positive battery cable once the car is running. id test the battery anyways. any local parts chain should be able to test you r battery.
