whats a good first car?

A good first car will be inexpensive to purchase and operate while the owner learns what he/she likes, wants, and needs in a vehicle. I'd get something japanese from the mid 90's on. Plenty of parts availability, cheaper to get fixed, good on gas, and cheap to insure.
