Hello all,

I'm new to the fourms. Im hoping someone can maybe shed some light on
this...

I have a 1999 Honda Civic LX Auto 74,000 miles, Car made a loud thump and
sounded like a flat, I had towed to Honda dealer advised me I some how had
broken all three Motor mounts. Also suggested timing belt, drive belts,
water pump and Fuel injection cleaning, also as a prevenitive I replaced
the fuel filter and plugs.

The car ran good for a day, Now all of a sudden it makes a high pitched
metal to metal noise on idle I dont here if I run it out a few thousand
RPM's, and it doesnt sound like a belt screech. Also the car sounds awfult
to me, It has a bit of a lope to it that it never had when it went in
there.

Dealer wants me to bring it back to them, Im a bit scared to seeing how it
runs now and I paid 1200 dollars for all this work.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated

The Honda dealer should stand behind their work. Unfortunately, the
symptoms you've described sound like they may have gotten something wrong
with the timing belt. Do NOT drive the car. Have it towed back to the
dealership. If the Honda dealer does not stand behind their work then you
should contact Honda Motor Company Customer Service at...

I spoke to Honda, they state to just drive the vechicle in and they will
put me in a loaner. I really do hate driving it a half hour if they did
something wrong :-/ I guess if worse comes to worse, if they damaged the
motor they would have to fix it right?

If this is true, in effect there really is metal to metal, than driving it
back to the dealer is probably not a good idea.

Can you see anything in the engine compartment that might be the source for
this noise?

I've looked around the motor I can not see anything that would be causing
the noise. To me the closet thing I ever herd to this noise is a bad
Pulley, but I dont see how a pulley could ne ok befor they start the work
and be bad the next day after picking it up :-/
Then with the engine having a lope sound to it Im really concerned
something wasn't done correctly. This is why I took it to Honda instead of
attemping to do it my self or have a fly by night shop do it. But I'm not
going to jump to conclusions till the dealer looks at it, I requested a
different mechanic but they said the mechanic that did the work would have
to look at the car...

 

Well I took the car back to the dealer, they were nice enough to loan me a
2004 2 Door Accord EX V6 WHAT a car....Back to realty, They advised me the
mechanic over tightened the belt and damaged a gasket in the air box when
he did the Fuel Inhection cleaning and that the car is good to go.

I went to the dealer reved it out a few thouand RPM's let it go to idle
and repeated several times, satisifed it wasnt make the noise I left. Well
I got about 10 miles to my house and it started the same noise again. The
dealer said it is a whistle not a metal to metal noise. What ever it is I
just want them to fix it. I brought out a stethoscope and if facing the
car it is comeing from the right hand side of the motor in either the
timing belt cover or the pulleys.

Is it possible the goof that over tightened the belts damaged a pulley?
and would Honda be responsible?

I'm really not in the mood to make another trip to the dealer I dont know
what to do at this point....

Keep taking it back till they get it right. It is your only choice.
You may ask that another technician be assigned to the problem.

Which belt was over tightened?

Damaging a pulley, not likely. However, it is possible to damage the
bearings in a device that is turned by that pulley. Alternator bearings
come to mind here.

Another possibility is that they did not change the timing belt tensioner
bearing. An old bearing will usually not make noise with an old belt.
However, once a new, properly tensioned belt is put on the bearing can begin
to make noise. Check your invoice. It would be interesting to know what
parts they did put into the timing belt.

I would take it back to the dealer until they get it right. You could take
it to another shop and have them diagnose the problem and then take that
information with you to the dealer. However, that will wind up costing you
for the other shop's diagnosis time.

If it really is a whistling noise, then one possible source is the PCV
valve. If you pinch the hose connecting to the PCV valve closed and the
noise stops then you've found your problem.

Well I called the dealer bright and early, they are not concerned that it
is anything major.. The tech that worked on my car is going on vacation
for a week and would like me to drive the car as is for a week. They
further stated that they have never a noise like this.

Eric you bring up a very interesting point, I would like to know what they
replaced when they did the timing belt. That in its self was almost 600
dollars. I would like to know if they replaced the bearing. The only thing
i see on the recipt that is running off the page is: Water Pump, Coolant,
Belts...hrmmmm

The dealer is saying that they think it is just something with the
throttle body, something clugged in there or something and are offering to
redo the throttle body cleaning in one week. They further stated that they
already replaced a gasket on the air box that was damaged.

When I listen to the car its not coming from the throttle body its coming
from the right hand side of the motor, more towards the altenator.

 

Well I looked at the receipt there isn't any bearings, just the belts and
water pump.

The car has gotten to the point were I aint driving it now, the noise is
so loud people are giving me dirty looks and rolling there windows up. Im
going to bring it back to the dealer Monday I could care less the mechanic
that messed up my car err worked on my car is on a week long vacation. Im
going to tell them the car in this condition is unacceptable, and to make
it right and I will not pick it up till I feel its right.
