Re: When does VTEC kick in?
I know that I feel a surge of power on my 02 Civic Ex with auto trans at
4500, give or take a few hundered rpm. I've heard that manual trans cars
are programmed closer to 5000 rpm.

I feel no surge of power with my '99 Si, but I do get a deeper exhaust note
at around 6500 rpms and it pulls steadily to the 8k redline.

Re: When does VTEC kick in?
In the 2001 Civic EX engine, there are two VTEC switch points. The first
VTEC switch point is at 2500. Here the engine goes from economy mode (3
valves) to normal (4 valves). I can't quite figure out where the high-rpm
VTEC switch point is. In any case, the high rpm VTEC switch point is there
to keep the engine from running out of breath, not to give it a boost like
the more sporty VTEC engine models. The 1.7 engine is great on fuel, but
pretty miserable for mid-range pull.
