99 Elantra GLS
Hello All,
On my sister's 99 Elantra the engine has just suddenly started to shake while in drive. It almost seems like 1 piston isn't firing. She has
about 52,000 miles on it. I've replaced the spark plugs about 20,000 miles ago with NGKs. The only thing is that I bought them from the Hyundai dealer
and who know how long they were sitting there. I'm going to replace the spark plugs with Bosch and see if that fixes the problem but if anyone has any
insight on this, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Nick

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
Nick, If you haven't allready, replace the plug wires.
My 99 GLS has a little over 60K miles and I had to replace the plug wires twice.
Also don't forget to have the timming belt replaced at 60K.

Any CELs? If you were misfiring there would be a CEL.

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
doest matter if the plugs been sitting around for a while, have you replaced
the ignition wires?
Also, I wouldnt recommend using Bosch plugs, stick with ngk's.

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
No I have not replaced the wire. Do they typically need replacing at 50,000 miles?
Thanks,
Nick

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
Thanks all for your help! It turns out that the wires were bad. I ended up getting new ones with lifetime warrenty on them so hopefully they won't go
bad for a long time. I also bought a new set of Bosch platinum plugs for $2, should I leave these in or put the NGK's back in?
Thanks,
Nick

A number of years ago (5?-6?), Consumer Reports tested the
Bosch+4 plugs and found them no different in action, from 'regular'
plugs. You can take CU's info any way you want. =;-)

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
Thanks for the followup.....I just want to make sure that they don't
damage the engine. On the next swap, I'll be putting back the NGKs.

Re: 99 Elantra GLS
If I remember correctly, they still had "regular distributors" as opposed to
DIS.... If this is the case, have you checked the cap and rotor? If it dose
have the DIS ignition, try swapping the coil with a new one. That at least
will give you an idea of what it isn't.

If it ain't broke, we can fix that.....
