Elantra 93 Engine
Hey guys,
I have a friend that is requesting a part for his 1993 Hyundai Elantra
(for a timing belt replacement) and he is not sure what engine his car
has. He believes it is the 1.6L DOHC (standard transmission). Can
anyone with a 93 Elantra with the original engine please send me a pic
of the engine (elcaca AT AT AT @yahoo.com [[remove AT's]] with
subject elantra picture... I get a lot of SPAM)? This way we can
compare engines. I am trying to get a picture from him as well.
He lives in a country that has no Hyundai dealerships, and parts are
not easy to come by.
I appreciate any help with this.

hyundaitech,
thanks for your reply.
The VIN is part of the problem... the number he sent me is
KMHJF31LPPU563595, which makes no sense... the 9th character is not a
number (if everything else is correct the check character should be a
4 not a P) and the character for the engine has an L (not an M or R).
So think there is a mistake somewhere, so I have him checking the VIN
again as we speak.
He also tells me that the engine block says 1500 on it and that he
thinks it is a 1.6L DOHC 16-valve engine, does that make sense?
Thanks again for your reply.

The VIN number is KMHJF31LPPU563595 indeed. This car was produced for
the Korean marked, that’s why the 9th digit is a P (not a number) and
the 8th digit is an L (so it does not match the R or M of the
northamerican cars). The side of the engine has G40L written on it (is
that the engine model?), and it is definetely a 1.6L DOHC 16-valve
engine.
So now here is my question, if anyone can answer it, would this engine
take the same parts as the nortamerican 1.6L engine (model number
G4CR)?
Any help is appreciated.
Cheers,
R C

A '93 Elantra should have a Mitsubishi motor in it, so that's the
place to start your parts search. "G40L" could be Mitsu engine model,
(usually rendered as 4G##) but I didn't find anything matching that
(which doesn't mean much).
