AWD to RWD

Is it possible to run only rear driveshafts on a '93 Subaru Impreza?

Probably if you got a locked centre differential.

Talk to "Fast WRX" on this site... he's got a 2001+ Impreza which has been converted to FWD... he'll be able to tell you what to do...

LMFAO....that was exactly what i was thinking, word for word, before I scrolled down and saw your post. My only guess would be so he doesn't have to find an AWD dyno, but other than that, there would be no advantage in going to FWD....unless he only races from a roll, i guess

Well with a big enough slick and a very carefully set up suspension, I don't think his 60's with FWD were far off those from what they were when the car was AWD. I think he was having problems with the rest of the drivetrain, and going to FWD alleviated some of those problems. Plus he probably gained a lot more top end acceleration having ditched all the weight and frictional losses that the rear wheel drive system would have added.

^^^ I see your point, but a RWD conversion would be the route to take because of weight transfer. Any idea how much power he was making? Once I began making decent power in my fwd laser it became less and less fun to drive on the street. I'd rather to be able to use 100% of my power, then to gain 5-10% more power from lack of drivetrain loss and only be able to put down 85% of that power (pulling #'s out my ***, lol). When it was really cold out, or just a lil bit wet out I'd be able to roll on the gas at 100km/h in 5th and break my tires loose once boost hit...which sucks. Granted I didn't run the best tires on the street. In the end, if its working for him and he's happy with it.... great, cause I know I'm going miss the hardcore highway pulls once my awd is up and running.

I think the reason he didn't go full RWD is that the RWD drivetrain simply isn't strong enough. I know what you mean about being able to use all your power, and I agree with you. I'd much rather have a 500hp AWD car then a 400hp FWD car... the AWD car needs more power to run as fast as the FWD car, but its a hell of a lot easier to put the power down to the ground.

Swap in a 2003+ Sti tranny with DCCD. That's the easiest solution (not the cheapest though!)

AWD is the only reason to buy a subaru... its like getting a new-fangled CVT and paying an extra 2k for it, then pulling it in favour of a 4spd Auto.

Dont butcher the Subaru

It is a very simple process... You can buy a RWD center diff for subaru trannys.. patrick richard at rocket racing sells them... and i will be selling them in january... You just remove the center diff and install the piece... as for your front axles, you need to remove them and use an axle stub just in the hubs. The kits i will be selling will be good for 400hp and include front hub studs

Smile 2 wheel drive

There is a fuse to defete the awd in the fuse panel it is great for summer more gas milage.
However I dont know if older Subies have it. On my 00 ' Legacy GT it is under the hood, but in the newer ones its in the fuse box by the drivers left knee.
