I have. I've seen the other too, but then again, I don't know whether they may be going to a call or not at the time. I also have no way of knowing if that call gets cancelled because another cruiser got there first, so I don't automatically think the worst if that blown red light is then followed up by a turn into the coffee shop a minute or two later.


So what if it is? The RIDE program is specifically designed to show the public that the police are serious about impaired driving. You do realize that RIDE programs pull in only a small percentage of all impaired driving arrests? The rest are nabbed by regular patrols, often when they pull someone over for rolling through a stop sign, or for speeding, or for aggressive driving. So why spend all that money on RIDE checkpoints pulling over almost 1/4 million cars in Toronto each year, yet only nailing a couple of hundred drivers?

RIDE programs are more about raising awareness than actually catching offenders. ERASE is also about raising awareness, awareness of unsafe driving, unsafe vehicle condition, and unsafe or illegal vehicle mods. ERASE is a direct response to a huge increase in complaints about aggressive driving behaviour, usually involving modified cars.

By the way, traffic enforcement consumed only 6% of the Toronto Police operating budget in 2004. Toronto spends more on community policing and foot patrols than on traffic enforcement.

That sounds about right for Toronto. It's outside the city in Durham and Peel regions and all the OPP territory that Traffic becomes a high priority. There doesn't seem to be anything else for them to do.
