affordable resonable sub

at volume 20 the deck shuts off, in turn shutting off entire system


So my friend just put a deck and 4 new speakers in his mercury mystique. The deck is an Alpine CDE 9874 and the speakers are Pioneer 3-way ts-a6872r. The speakers are wired directly into the deck, no amp. At around volume 20 the deck shuts off, in turn shutting everything else off. Im not exactly why it happens but i think it can be solved by installing an amp. In the near futre he wants to add an affordable sub. Does he need 2 seperate amps, one for speakes and one for sub or could one large amp do the job?

Here is a solution I have come up with but im not sure if it will work:
since the speakes are rated for 40W at 4ohms:

if i wire one side (in series) on one amp's channel(2 speakers)

amp output at 2 ohms: I need 320 watts per channel
amp output at 4 ohms: I need 160 watts per channel (80W per speaker at a resistence of 8ohms so the amp needs double the power(40x2=80))
amp output at 8 ohms: I need 80 watts per channel

If I go parrallel

amp output at 2ohms : I need 40 watts per channel



since that would take up 2 channels of the 4 I could set him up with

a dual voice coil sub?
or
bridging the remaining 2 channels?
or
2 subs?

I don't think i could go 2 channel because in series the resistence is too high and in parallel the resistence is too low. Does that make sense?

Maybe someone (selective sound ) could find a more simplified solution and or offer some spacific components that would work.( entry level/affordable sub and amp/amps that would work)

instructions show you how to wire speakers to the deck properly. personally, i wouldn't mess around too much with a deck amp...what you want to do or are trying to do sounds really confusing. wiring speakers in parallel and all... and you cannot wire a sub to a deck amp. you need a separate amp for that. you can get 5 channel amps that are made to power all 4 sets of speakers plus a sub.

you are headed in the right direction with selective sound. they're good guys there. they had some killer deals on sub/sub box combos and amps last time i was there. keep in mind that a good box can make a huge difference in how the sub sounds.

also, read up a bit more about wattage ratings and other things (google search helped, so did DIYmobileaudio.com). it's a lot easier to DIY car audio when you know what you are doing.

i know u can't connect a sub to the deck amp, but that isn't a problem because we don't have a sub yet. See we have the speakers in the deck amp inself witch isn't enogh power. So I understand he needs an amp for the speakers.

All my calculations are requirements for what amp I need to get. Now I know that he could go with a 4 channel amp for the speakers and another seperate amp for the sub. Im trying to save some money for him by only needing 1 amp. Also it would be easier to wire up 1 amp, (less fuses, and 1 wireing kit instead of 2, aswell as only needing to tune one amp)

I have read online about car audio, im also planning to go to UNI next year for science so I understand electricity. Im just not 100% SURE what set ups are cheap and what are even availible. For example, i didn't know 5 channel amps exhisted.
