Illinois Plate Law

(625 ILCS 5/3‑413) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 3‑413)
(Text of Section from P.A. 92‑668)
Sec. 3‑413. Display of registration plates, registration stickers and driveway decal permits.
(a) Registration plates issued for a motor vehicle other than a motorcycle, trailer, semitrailer, truck‑tractor, apportioned bus, or apportioned truck shall be attached thereto, one in the front and one in the rear. The registration plate issued for a motorcycle, trailer or semitrailer required to be registered hereunder and any apportionment plate issued to a bus under the provisions of this Code shall be attached to the rear thereof. The registration plate issued for a truck‑tractor or an apportioned truck required to be registered hereunder shall be attached to the front thereof.
(b) Every registration plate shall at all times be securely fastened in a horizontal position to the vehicle for which it is issued so as to prevent the plate from swinging and at a height of not less than 5 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of such plate, in a place and position to be clearly visible and shall be maintained in a condition to be clearly legible, free from any materials that would obstruct the visibility of the plate, including, but not limited to, glass covers and tinted plastic covers. Clear plastic covers are permissible as long as they remain clear and do not obstruct the visibility of the plates. Registration stickers issued as evidence of renewed annual registration shall be attached to registration plates as required by the Secretary of State, and be clearly visible at all times.

This is the only problem- in your picture you can see your plate, but you still can't see all the numbers clearly- and thats with a picture taken from say what- at least 20 ft and from a height of around 4ft judging by what you can see.

I personally wouldn't pull someone over and give them a ticket for it, since I hate the front plate myself. But I would use it if I needed PC-(probable cause) to pull someone over for something else. Its all up to your local cops. Some are jerks and hate people with nice cars that try to bend the rules to comply- its either all of nothing. All laws are open to interpretation and you could argue that nowhere in there does it state at what height and distance from the ground does it have to visable- which if you are lying on the ground in front of the car you can clearly see the plate.

Actually it is very visable. My neighbor is a cop and I asked him if it was legit. He didn't see a problem with it. Again, each cop would have his/her own opinion. I just thought at least it is on and in front.

in that picture it's not visible, why give the oportunity when it doesn't look that bad in the correct place? I think it looks like it's intended to be on the grill, but when under it looks tacked on

Like I said, I tried what JPack did on his car and actually had more trouble with it there than not on the front at all.

Seems around here other officers see it down there and it actually draws more attention than not having a plate up there at all. I keep my front plate under my pass floor mat so that its at least in the car. But its not much a problem any more..gotta love job perks!!
