just remember their slogan was "inexpensive and built to stay that way" (no one has more bad engines than subaru, volkswagon is probably second with mitsu being 3rd and worst for transmissions)

... what you say!! <--- Obscure All Your Base reference.

There are a couple decent looking AWD Subies in there for what Paar is looking to spend. You're not going to get a car worth a damn when you're spending $2,000. If you're going to spend $2,000, I think an AWD Subaru is better than a random Cavalier.

but even a $10,000 subaru isn't as reliable as a $2000 cavalier (not to mention parts are outrageous when it does break)

1. That depends on who drove it, and how it was maintained throughout its life.
2. Are you seriously trying to tell me that reliability is an issue when you're spending less than a paycheque on a CAR? You do NOT buy a $2,000 car for reliability, I don't care how thick the cloud of pot smoke is in your house.
3. Older Subie parts are cheap. You wanna know 'outrageous' part prices, buy a BMW/Mercedes without a warranty, those are outrageous.

I would suggest looking at a GEO/Chevy Tracker. I had bought one new in '97. It was great in the snow and very dependable, overall not a bad little truck.

I have bought many cars for under 2 grand and had no trouble. When I was selling used parts yards would not sell any used subaru parts with a warranty, if your buying a dd you don't buy a car that is notorious for breaking.

I bought two cars for under $200 and they were just fine. Doesn't mean one can bank on that being the case.

cavaliers are great cars. my mom bought one back in 96 and the only thing that ever went wrong was the water pump went out at 105k and the blower motor went out at like 80k. other than that didn't have a single problem with it until it was totalled about a year ago. i got my civic for 1700. my dad is really good at talking people down but he wanted 2400. the body is rough but no rust and the interior is really clean. 5 spd manual. its actually quicker than i thought a little rice burner would be. probly not gonna be good on snow but i just got new tires on it so im not too worried about it.

That's right. But if you're going to gamble on a cheap car, why not buy the car that is cheaper to fix, and that parts are easy to find and readily available should something go wrong?

That's the nice thing about domestics compared to imports.

If I'm looking for a car that is the equivalent of a disposable lighter, I'm gonna buy something I can have some fun with for a couple months, and sell immediately in the spring.

Hence, AWD donuts FTW.
