New engine reccomendations....

Hey people, I'm finally looking for a car. I was thinking of getting a Probe, prolly from the year 1994 and up. Well here is the thing, the GT version offers sporty suspension, and a V6 ~167hp engine, whereas a regular Probe has std. suspension and an inline 4 cylinder engine with something like ~110hp. Now the price difference between the models is about $1000....So I was thinking of getting a standard probe with an inline engine and replacing it with a beefier engine and tranny...something in the range of 200hp for the engine. What do you think of this people? Are there any angines you can reccomend that would be good for this car, and that are not tight on my wallet. Thanks

Car will be a street car. Looking for something sporty on the street and something decent on the track. I know that the stock 110 or so hp won't be enough for me, with some add on upgrades to the new engine I am looking for a final value of roughly 250hp.

Start with a V6 Probe GT because swapping a V6 into the I4 cars requires more then just an engine and transmission. Brakes are different, suspension is different, wiring is different, etc. The additional $1000 spent on the purchase of the car is well worth it, swapping all the V6 stuff into an I4 car after would probably cost well over $1000 anyway. The engine you are looking for is called the Mazda KLZE and it puts out something like 200hp. These engines are cheap and can be found for under $1500, and are a direct swap into a V6 car.

The probe is a nice choice, some ppl dunt like them i myself considered some b4 getting my car, but like was said go for the v6 model and go 5 spd it still has nice comfort levels but the car is getting old. The Kl-ZE is the J-spec engine from the mazda 626 and some others it has something like 200 hp overall its a nice car when taken care of. Have you considered a 240sx?
the v6 probe might have 167 hp but ive seen it lose to a stock 240s, also theres better aftermarket support for the nissans

Try finding a clean 240SX for a decent price that hasn't been yet snatched up by a drifting fan-boy.

thanks for the replies, its now painting a picture in my head. Spoke to a few people with cars that are over 10 years old and they recommended me to try getting a car that's as new as possible, since aging is a major cause of repairs. Umm for ~$3g's [money i was planning to get a Probe for], i could find a very decent year 2000+ Cavalier. How is that car from any experiences?

I really doubt with 3 gs ull find a nice 200+ cavi, first off when i was looking thru i was looking around 5 gs and could barely find any descent mileage z24s (2.4l 155hp/150tq) and regular cavies can sure be made fast with alot of money but are ugly, just get a civic?
