Dont listen to them.

There is nothing wrong with welding the wastegate flapper shut and running an external wastegate. Many people do this, no harm done. Just make sure you know someone that can properly weld cast iron.

That will actually be a MUCH better setup. An old turbo like that has a 95% chance of having hair line cracks in the exhaust housing, usually in the wastegate area. These cracks will cause boost creep. Running a good external gate will eliminate this problem and give you much better boost control and better top end as well.

Internal wastegates (specifically on old turbos) ALWAYS loose boost near redline.

Very true but for a low psi set up on a stock quad 4 I would stick with the original. He's not gonna be running 12's on that turbo set up.

This is also true....If you plan on staying less than 10psi just stick to the stock wastegate setup. You won't require the benefits of using an external wastegate on such low boost.

brianb has a spectacular aura aboutbrianb has a spectacular aura about
Turbo

I am hoping to run about 5-6 ,possibly 7 psi . I don't think the motor is strong enuff to handle any more than that. From what I have heard , you can't run too much boost on a motor with 10:1 compression.
