Just met a guy that has an Astro vanwith 285,000 miles on it and uses
Valvoline 5w-30 He is a courier so the van is moving 10 hours a day. Regular maintenance even with PENISOIL, errr penzoil,, will return good results. I know about that (now) but back then I should have at least researched the issue...I didn't know enough about synthetics then even to do that. As I said, however, Dino oil has served well, but I think the engine would be in better shape if I had changed over even 15 years ago if not in the 70s. NOW, the Internet (and UseNet of course) make it pretty easy to research something BEFORE buying it, if you don't have anyone knowledgable locally to ask. I didn't know ANYONE using Mobil 1 back then, hence it wasn't even an issue. John D. Reminds me of a story - I used to work in the automotive department at Target, (back when they did car service) A guy comes in screaming because his engine is not running good, oil smells burnt etc. He sail Mobil One advertise 25K between oil changes and he was not even up to 22K and his motor was shot. He thought target would get him a new motor, because that's where he bought the oil from. I calmly referred him to Mobil and then laughed at his expense when he left. |

I use Amsoil and change every 35,000 with a filter change in the middle of
that period. Mainly because I'm lazy. I used dino oil and only changed it every 5,000 and my '95 Legacy is still running strong with 285,000! If you are buying synthetic to preserve your engine and changing it every 5,000 or sooner you are wasting your money...unless you are in the Antarctic.
