i have a question for the mighty wizard of oz..., .... i just picked up an 84 lx that has a 351W out of a 79 t-bird.... it is currently quto and i;m doing a full drivetrain comversion... as it was originally a 6cyl.... the question is the input shaft bearing for the transmission... will a standard 5.0L fit in the crank properly? if not where should i look for one that would???

I assume you're referring to the pilot bearing? Since the Birds never came with a manual trans in 79, I'd say you'd have to remove the stock pilot bearing and get an 86-95 Mustang 5 speed pilot bearing pressed in there. Is the 351 running and driving right now? Are you using the stock '84 C5 trans behind the 351???? Thats a recipe for disaster, those things are weak!
Forgive me if I'm off base here, I'm really really tired right now but after reading this 3-4 times I think I'm right. I think.

ok thanks... since the auto's don't come with a pilot shaft bearing all i need is a standard mustang 5spd bearing?? cool... thanks.... they don't need to be pressed in... if you know what u're doing you can do it carefully with a little anti-sieze, the right sized socket, a hammer and some gentle convincing. i've done them b4... just didn't know what size for the windsor

the conversion to the 351 was done by a couple hillbillies that don't know what they're doing... looks like a couple butchers.... but it is in and running yes... sitting in my driveway but i CAN drive it.... i know everything is substandard with the old v6 drivetrain... but i have everything i need to convert it out of an 87 GT from flywheel to rear bumper

i had a question, if i was to take the tbird sc supercharger and try and put it on the v8 stang and make a spacer plate, what else would i be needing, and would it be a good way to go or not worth the trouble???

OK I'm a bit confused, you ARE doing a 5 speed conversion with a T5 right? All you'd need is the pilot bearing, a 10.5" 28oz balance flywheel (since the 5.0 is 50oz it wont work right) and a good heavy duty clutch. Make sure you grab the pedal assembly, cable, bellhousing and bolts and wiring to the trans. Butchery can be easily undone, and you are right most people dont know, or wouldnt try, to get the pilot bearing in with a socket

Not worth the trouble unless you have access to a machine shop with a lathe and mill. You would have to make a custom adaptor plate as well as making sure you line up the accessories etc and by the time you're done you might as well have done a DIY turbo setup and that would be far cheaper, easier, and waaaaay faster. If you really want a roots/screw type blower, theres a guy on the corral selling Kenne Bell blowers in need of rebuilds for dirt cheap.

i had a t-bird sc once... the chargers work GREAT on a 6! but i wouldn't use them for ANYTHING else... the whole system is way too complicated and MUST be 100% airtight... ANY leaks and you WILL notice it... personally i don't like turbos... but that's just me... i prefer chargers....a FREAK of alot easier to setup and drive.....

ok well i don't have ANY more cashflow to go towards my conversion... i have atock everything out of an 87 gt... flywheel included.... i don't even know if this starter is going to connect properly with the flywheel.... and if i keep the heavier flywheel on the 351.... wouldn't it just build more torque??? (like it needs any more.. lol) they seem to work fine with the smaller engines

as for the tranny... i have no freaking idea if it's a t5 or t55... h ow can i find out???

There's no T55 so you're ok. If it came in a Fox Stang, then its a T5. Heavier flywheels dont make more torque, they just retain more inertia. Just reuse the 5.0 starter and get yourself a flywheel for a 28oz motor. The 5.0HO flywheel will not work, the car will vibrate like a ****.

As far as the fly wheel goes, when I put my 351W in my 65 Stang and used a T5, I got a flywheel out of a 5.0 Stang and had it balanced for a 351W.
She works like a charm.

definately have acces to a machine shop, own both a mill and lathe, and use to own the tbird and really loved how it drove, that why i was asking, ill try and make an adapter after i get a hold of the supercharger thanks for the info
