We have the TV on more than the 5 hours a day or whatever they use to get the life of the panels too so it wouldn't last as long for me, and I was told the LCD's had a longer life so we went with that.
I will agree that standard def. takes some time to get used to on the LCD since it seems blurry at times but HD makes up for it in my opinion.

Take a small photo, save it as a JPEG with about a 6 or 7 for compression in Photoshop (equivalent of a studio formatting video for standard def, broadcast quality). Then blow it up by about 300% (what your HDTV does). You'll see the compression artifacts, it's the same idea.

I'm just trying to figture out if I should buy an LCD or Plasma tv now.
Either way I'll probably go with a 42" unless I decide to splurge in which case I might go with a 47" or 50".

Pretty much over 42" and the LCD typically costs twice as much if you can even find them.
42" and under it's a wash. They both end up the same, if anything the LCD's can be found cheaper.
