For the record, did it. 1993 Civic Si Coupe (127hp) vs. a 1996 Cavalier Z24. Both cars were manual trans, and the civic beat the cavalier by about a car and a half. I saw someone post earlier about the cav having a shorter gearing. NOT SO, that's exactly why the civic won. The gearing is much shorter in th civic and it revs higher. Sorry to burst everyone's theory.
That being said...Who cares!?

But comparing a 2000 SIR to a 2000 Z24....I think civic will win no doubt.

lol ill add to it, before i did any serious mods i had no issues beating up on civic si's. so im not sure where you guys are finding your info but with equal mds an si is a joke to beat on. the sir was always a drivers race and often a little bit quicker because of the extra 10 hp. but, in a drag race if i could get the sir off the line, which i usually could, id be generally able to hold him back al lthe way down the quarter. but a better comparison is the sir over the si

Until the little asian ninja named VeeFag hiding inside the block kicks in! Then you plant your left foot, push yourself back in your seat, press the boost button which isn't hooked up, and let her rip! Until you realise the race ended 1/2 a mile ago..

vtec has never scared me. a high reving motor that makes nothing down low doesnt worry me. you can have 500 hp but if it doesnt happen till 7000 rpm with an 8000 rpm redline then its clearly useless

A motor with 500hp @ 7000rpm with a 8000rpm redline? Never seen that before, at least not in a honda.
Stock 95 Si coupe vs 95 Z24. Who cares? Who actually drives a stock car here?
On the other hand a 95 Si coupe civic would obviously be a beter platform to build upon. 95 Z24,

ok. first of all, i own a civic, but i used to have a z24 that had all bolt ons and spray. i was racing the car really often with and without nitrous and never had a poblem. i sold it to a friend (without the nitrous kit) and he drove the car for 2 years racing on and off and now its sold to another kid that keeps driving the car to this day. the cavy only had the power steering pump repaired and thats it. nothing ever broke. oh and the alternator went once. that cavy was auto with an interceptor shift kit, intake, int manifold , throttle body headers, catback and about a month ago it lost to a jdm gsr hatch with intake exshaust flywheel clutch and a tire by only a couple of cars. now the civic is not that fast but the cavy is auto.dont underestimate them they are torqey liitle ****ers. i had one i know.
as for the guy that said about the vtec motors making nothing down low,
1st: please experience yourself the motor and then make a decision.
2nd:it does not matter down low, because after launch the rpms never drop under 6000, it goes from 9200 to 6000 and up to 9200. so who cares what they do down low. especialy when launch rpm is at 5000 and the car slams to 9000 until it grips and drops you down to 6000.
then again i also have a 2 litre hatch without vtec that would scare many.
oh , the si would lose to a z24. its true, i have done it, lost to sir though. but then again i was auto and stock.
